THE recent order issued by the Archdiocese of Cebu to suspend Masses to protect parishioners from the deadly coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has left some priests with mixed feelings.

Although parish priests are happy that the welfare of churchgoers are being considered, some, like Fr. Mhar Vincent Balili, are also saddened since it will be the first time they will celebrate Mass without their parishioners.

Balili, who serves as a parish priest of the Mary Help of Christian Parish in Barangay Buhisan, Cebu City, said that because of the order, they have halted preparations for Holy Week.

“A lot of our parishioners called and approached us. They want an explanation as to why this is happening. I am touched by their concerns, especially those who go to Mass on a daily basis,” Balili added.

Balili said that although they won’t receive money collection to help maintain their church for the moment, they have set aside a budget for contingencies.

For his part, Msgr. Ruben Labajo, current vicar general and parish priest of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Balamban, said that while the order could affect churchgoers, it is also for their own safety.

“As we are telling people, sacrifice for the common good. Kami usab mismo as priests, mopakita usab ug sakripisyo (We, too, as priests have to make a sacrifice),” Labajo said.

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma issued a circular ordering all parishes in Cebu, including those under religious congregations, starting March 18, 2020, to suspend Masses indefinitely or until it becomes safe again for their congregation to gather in the wake of the Covid-19 health threat in the country.

Aside from Masses, the directive includes fiesta celebrations in the barrios and parishes. The Holy Week activities from April 5 to 12 will continue, but the parishes will have to conduct the religious observance without parishioners. (JCT)
