Quijano: Perhaps this is all a test

TRUTH is indeed stranger than fiction. Last month, if somebody told you there would be this strange novel virus that would make people sick, grind the world to a halt and change people’s lives, you would probably have laughed it off as some strange plot straight out of a science fiction novel.

I am not here to write about Covid-19. I am sure by now you have been inundated by information from several sources about this “veerus”. I am obviously not an expert on that and so I will leave that to the scientists, the virologists and epidemiologists.

But strangely, there appears to be no shortage of experts on this subject nowadays. Not only that, they have also mushroomed into resident authorities on crisis and resource management.

This, despite that fact that one thing is clear: the science is still out on this virus.

Previously we were told it wasn’t airborne. Now, a recent US study shows it can persist in the air for hours. We were also given the range of symptoms. Just yesterday, I read that a sizable number of patients presented with digestive issues and diarrhea so this must be taken into consideration.

Humanity is facing a moment of truth, potentially a point of no return. But instead of uplifting each other, some deem it an opportunity to ridicule and mock other people’s misery. Some gloat on social media about being proven correct, as if there are right or wrong answers here.

C’mon guys, we are better than that.

Perhaps this is a test. Perhaps God in His infinite wisdom decided to give humanity one last chance. Perhaps the apocalypse was already upon us, but our prayers made Him reconsider. Perhaps this was – IS- our last opportunity to show Him we are worth saving, after all.

If so, then we are failing it badly so far. But I have hope and let’s not give up on each other.

So while we are on different iterations or stages of quarantine, and while the real experts sort this out, let me do my part to entertain you with a topic I have an adequate grasp of.

With actual sports events being cancelled or postponed, this would be a good time to look back and reminisce about some of the best fights of all-time.

Sports bring hope to people and in this dire times, we sure could use mega-doses of it.

Boxing in so many ways, mirrors life because it is its perfect metaphor. We talk about blows thrown our way and rolling with the punches. We talk about winning and losing, and being in each other’s corner.

I don’t know about you, but I ain’t throwing in the towel yet. We can lick this mofo as long as we have each other’s backs.

So in my next column on Sunday, let me start by revisiting what some have dubbed as the greatest fight of all time- “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler vs Tommy “Hitman” Hearns . If you have some fights you would like me to write about, please send me an email with no viruses to jingo_quijano@yahoo.com or follow me on Twitter @thelastround.

LAST ROUND. It’s on my only sister, Jeehan Quijano , based in LA, who recently celebrated her birthday. Cheers!
