Philippines’ Covid-19 cases now at 307

THE Department of Health (DOH) announced 77 new cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the country, as of 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2020.

This brought the total number of confirmed cases to 307. It is the highest jump of cases recorded in a day since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The death toll rose to 19, with one new mortality reported Saturday.

Patient 205 is a 73-year old Filipino female from San Juan City with no travel or exposure history.

She is a known diabetic and is hypertensive.

She was pronounced dead on arrival at 4:44 pm on March 12 at The Medical City due to cardiac arrest.

However, Patient 205 was only confirmed positive for COVID-19 on March 18.

DOH Assistant Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire also announced five new recoveries, bringing the total to 13.

Vergeire said the DOH is happy to note that some of the patients who have recovered from Covid-19 were elderly, or those who belong to the “vulnerable” sector.

"There were 5 new recoveries, including 4 elderly, one of which is a severe case," noted the DOH.

First among those who recovered is Patient 62, who is a 35-year-old Filipino female from Rizal with no travel or exposure history.

Onset of symptoms began on March 1 and was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on March 13.

She was discharged on March 15 as she was already asymptomatic with one negative result.

Second is Patient 41, who is a 75-year-old Filipino female from Makati City with travel history from USA and exposure history to known Covid-19 cases.

Onset of symptoms began on March 1 and was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on March 11.

She was discharged on March 17 as she was already asymptomatic with 1 negative result.

Third is Patient 16, who is a 70-year old Filipino male from San Juan City and the husband of Patient 17, who also among those that recovered.

Onset of symptoms began on March 1 and was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on March 9.

He was discharged on March 19 as he was already asymptomatic with two negative results.

Fourth is Patient 17, who is a 69-year old Filipino female from San Juan City and wife of Patient 16, who is also among those who recovered.

Onset of symptoms began on March 2 and was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on March 9.

She was discharged on March 19 as she was already asymptomatic with two negative results.

Last is Patient 49, who is a 72-year old Filipino male from Batangas with exposure history to a known Covid-19 case.

Onset of symptoms began on March 1 and was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on March 11.

The known hypertensive patient was reported as a severe case on March 13 but was discharged on March 21 as he was already asymptomatic with two negative results.

The University of the Philippines (UP) announced that Aileen Baviera, a former dean of UP Asian Center, died before dawn Saturday from Covid. She was 60 years old. Her death, however, has yet to be included by the DOH in the official count.

Most of the people who died from Covid-19 were people 60 years old and above, with co-morbidities or other medical conditions.

The DOH has yet to release the profile of the new mortality, those who recovered, and the new confirmed cases. (LMY)
