Limlingan: Some ironies in times of Covid

DURING calamities and when people are told to evacuate their dwellings, a lot of those whose lives are in danger if they stayed are very adamant to leave their homes. This happens during the occurrence of floods and volcanic eruptions.

During Covid-19, people are not just reminded that they need to stay home, they are even ordered to remain in their abodes. There are however those who cannot stay home and find places to go to even if malls, places of interests and establishments are on a lockdown.

A man on a motorcycle was flagged down and when he was asked, he simply told authorities that he is bored and that he is visiting his brother living in another city. A group of male teens rode their bicycles and when caught up in a quarantine checkpoint, they told policemen that they are just improving their immune system to fight-off the virus through exercise.

We can see Health Secretary Francisco Duque very active on giving updates to the public on Covid-19 via press conferences. As the holder of the health portfolio, it is just proper and fitting that he keeps the public posted on the virus including the figures on those who were infected.

Unfortunately, the health secretary is now undergoing quarantine due to his exposure to another health official who is positive for the Covid-19. No government position indeed cannot exempt any from getting infected.

While others cannot help except to worry on the spread of the virus, others simply do not care about it as some group of men in various places in the country were apprehended for violation of the enhanced community quarantine order and the curfew.

Some people cannot restrain themselves from doing some violations despite knowing the rules they violate. They might be thinking that the alcohol they drink has the same effect of the alcohol that we use to disinfect.

While we despise the word Covid, some parents named their newborns with the name of the virus. This may be a great memorial for them of the global pandemic that we are experiencing now when their children grow old. However, the names associated with "Covid" might be the reason for bullying someday or might stigmatize the people encountering such name.

New parents need not adopt trending words for the names of their children. The latter shall carry the burden of being the subject of jokes and not the parents who chose names associated with something that is not good. There are a wide array of names to choose anyway.

We are currently on a lockdown. While this "vacation" lasts, boredom is setting-in to many. The irony is, we cannot go to other places to while away time and avoid getting bored.

This is a more opportune time for family bonding at home. As President Rodrigo Duterte advised, we need to explore our homes for there might be still some areas in our dwellings that we haven't visited yet. While it seems to be a joke, the President's remark is very true. We can do many things while staying at home.
