UCMed opens cardiovascular center

NEWLY-opened University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMed) is now completely operational, with the opening of its Cardiovascular Center over the weekend.

The center, which is equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities to deliver the “best and safest” cardiac care to patients, is composed of a cardiac catheterization laboratory (Cath Lab), cardiovascular operating room, cardiac recovery room, cardiac rehabilitation unit, cardiac diagnostic unit and coronary care unit/cardiac-thoracic ICU.

According to UCMed chairman Augusto Go, all the equipment they bought for the hospital is new and advanced.

“The goal here is to provide our patients the best possible medical care that is in the market but at an affordable rate,” said Go, underscoring that eventually people will patronize UCMed the same way its other businesses like the University of Cebu (UC) has attracted the education market, which now has 48,000 students in its four campuses in Cebu.

“It takes time to build reputation but we will get there,” Go said, adding that on top of the state-of-the-art facilities, the new hospital also has the best medical professionals.

UCMed also has plans to be accredited by international institutions to position itself as a medical tourism facility. But for now, Go said they will build on the local population first.

UCMed is a 300-bed hospital in Mandaue City. It is an affiliate of UC and St. Vincent Hospital. The hospital soft-opened last May.

The Cath Lab offers the newest diagnostic imaging equipment, the Philips Allura Xper Fd20, while the Cardiovascular Operating Room offers the latest and most advanced equipment for cardiac surgeries. The hospital bought the newest heart-lung machine—the Stockert S5-the first in Visayas and Mindanao.

The cardiovascular recovery room is a two-bed specialized intensive care unit where post-cardiac surgery patients will be monitored by cardiac anesthesiologists and highly-trained nurses using advanced monitoring equipment. The cardiac rehabilitation unit also offers a comprehensive, medically-supervised program using top-of-the-line exercise equipment that includes all components necessary for a full recovery from a cardiac hospitalization.

The cardiovascular diagnostic unit, meanwhile, performs various diagnostic tests that helps physicians in diagnosing heart and circulatory problems.
