First family to campaign for Arroyo

SINCE President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo pledged to concentrate on governance than campaigning, the First Family will be the one to woe Pampanga for her.

Arroyo, who is bound to end her term on June 30, is seeking for a congressional seat in Pampanga's second district in replacement of her son Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo.

The President's spokespersons earlier said that Mrs. Arroyo would remain focused on her duties as president and would even resort to absent campaigning when local campaign starts on March 26.

In a chance interview with First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo during Manny Pacquiao's courtesy call at Malacanang, he said he will personally lead the campaign sortie of his wife.

“Of course, I’ll campaign for the president,” he said.

He maintained that Arroyo will still concentrate on her presidential obligations, thus he and his family will make a way for her to win.

“There are many people who will campaign for her, Mikey is there, her partymates, everyone is there (to help her)," he noted.

The First Gentleman also dispelled speculations about President Arroyo's plan to cling to power.

“They are all doing a scenario. They’re all oppositionists. They’re the ones always saying all those things,” he said.

He assured that Mrs. Arroyo will step down on June 30 and they are thinking of taking care of their grandchildren even if the President wins in Congress.

“Congresswoman is easier than president, the duties are less, it’s easier," Mike added.

On speculations of President Arroyo being house speaker, Mike said they will leave this issue to the officials in Congress.

“That’s up to the congressmen whether they’ll elect her as speaker or not but it’s up to them,” he said.

He furthered that it is all speculations from the opposition but he will not prevent them from doing so.

For those who are eager for the President to leave her post, Mike has this to say: "It's just a few months, all they have to do is wait." (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
