Brgy. capt. explains curfew breach

AFTER the video of Kalunasan Barangay Captain Nunilon Monares drinking outdoors during curfew hours went viral on social media, he clarified that he didn’t violate the temporary curfew and the liquor ban implemented by Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella in the wake of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) scare.

In an interview, Monares said that on the day of the incident, he had just come from Sitio Oprra where he and several barangay employees distributed relief goods to fire survivors. They finished late, he said, since there were many beneficiaries.

“We didn’t finish until around 6 p.m. I then went to a birthday party of a friend in Barangay Kamputhaw,” he said in Cebuano.

He denied drinking liquor that night. He also denied that he went to his girlfriend’s house.

“I was not arrested. I repeat, I was not arrested. I had just finished eating and had gone out of the house when someone approached me to help the two persons who were taken into custody,” he said in Cebuano.

Monares said the two men were taken to the Abellana Police Station where they paid P500 each as penalty before they were released.

On Tuesday, March 24, 2020, Labella said he directed City Attorney Rey Gealon to investigate the incident.

“He (Monares) is also another public officer. Public officials are also models. That was why I said that all public officials should be ready to face an investigation if they get embroiled in any controversy,” Labella said in Cebuano.

The mayor imposed a curfew from 8 p.m to 5 a.m. and temporarily prohibited the selling of liquor and drinking in public places after he placed the city under a general community quarantine on March 16 to prevent the spread of Covid-19. (JCT)
