Hotels provide temporary shelter for IT-BPM biz

SOME city hotels are getting relief from dismal occupancy as some outsourcing companies are taking up their rooms during the mass quarantine.

Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Association of Cebu (HRRAC) president Carlo Suarez said this is benefiting hotels in Mactan Island and those near the business hubs—Cebu IT Park and Cebu Business Park.

In a phone interview Wednesday, March 25, 2020, Suarez said hotels have seen average occupancy dip to as low as 15 percent as they are badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Visitor arrivals to Cebu have collapsed due to travel restrictions while local consumers are staying in their homes amid the mass quarantine aimed at containing the spread of Covid-19.

“Because of these outsourcing companies, some hotels are experiencing 30 to 40 percent occupancy,” said Suarez.

A number of business process management companies have temporarily housed their employees in hotels, following a government order for businesses to allow the work-from-home scheme for their workers. (CSL)
