Ex-councilor appointed as GAB chief

FORMER Bacolod City councilor Juan Ramon “Monju” Guanzon was appointed Monday by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to replace Chairman Eric Buhain of the Games and Amusement Board (GAB).

Buhain was removed as GAB chairman then appointed as a director of the Bureau of Immigration. He was previously chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission prior to being named as GAB chairman.

Prior to his appointment as GAB commissioner, Guanzon, who is currently president of the Negros Amateur Boxing Association, was a member of the board of directors of the Negros Basketball Association (NBA) and was also then the NBA tournament commissioner.

In boxing, he is best known as having maintained a stable of young and promising Negrense boxers whom he honed to later become a member of the national team including the likes of 2006 Doha Asian Games bantamweight gold medalist Joan Tipon of Barangay Banago, Bacolod City.

Naba officials led by vice president for South Negros Oscar “Dodong” Bascon, treasurer Vic Tan and director Toto Regalado on Monday hailed Guanzon’s appointment as “a big boon to Negros boxing.”
