SENATOR Juan Edgardo Angara and an unnamed congressman have also contracted the novel coronavirus.

“I regret to announce that today, March 26, I received my test result and it is positive for Covid-19. I have been feeling some symptoms like mild fever, cough, headaches and general weakness,” Angara said in a statement Thursday, March 26.

He assured that he has not been in contact with the public since taking the test on March 16.

“I ask for your prayers that together we are able to pull through this tremendous challenge,” he said.

In a separate statement, Isabela Representative Antonio “Tonypet” Albano said another colleague has the new coronavirus.

He has gone into self-quarantine after learning this.

"We bravely went to work and two of our congressmen are now positive with Covid-19, two congressional staff have died, many more are PUIs and PUMs," Albano said.

He said that his colleagues at the House have also been exposed to ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Eric Go Yap, who recently announced he is Covid-19 positive.

"My dear family, and friends,I have to go into serious self Isolation again for 14 days. Cong. Eric Yap, who was with us last Monday for 20 hours straight, tested positively for Covid," Albano said.

"We were the few Congress people who went to Congress to pass the emergency powers for President Rodrigo Duterte to fight this deadly virus for all of you," he added.

According to Albano, while social distancing was practiced in Congress, there were times they had to remove their protective masks.

"Cong Eric and I worked closely together to fix and amend this bill with everyone else. I practiced social distancing with everyone there, but I had my mask off at times when we were all eating and working," he said.

Albano added that he could not wear his face mask for too long because he has a pre-existing asthma.

"My asthma can’t have the mask on for more than 10 mins. So I take it off and stay away from my colleagues at around one to two meters away. I hope that was enough in an airconditioned congress hall and dining area," he said.

At the Senate, Senators Juan Miguel Zubiri and Aquilino Pimentel III said they have tested positive for the new coronavirus, which causes Covid-19. (SunStar Philippines)
