Herstory: Malinda Vasquez

THROUGH the years, women have positively emerged in the community with a greater role and significant purpose. Some arise as women leaders, while others operate their own businesses. Cebu, in fact, is full of these empowered women who serve the society for the betterment of those in it, whether they serve in the hospitality industry, specialize in beauty or work in the medical field. Women should be celebrated every day, and as a way to honor them this Women’s Month, we recognize three out of the many girl bosses in the city who now live in their prime and fruitful years with a whole empire behind their backs.

Feature dates: Dr. Malinda Vasquez (March 27), Farrah Casilda Nazareth (March 28) and Herley Broutin (March 29).

SunStar LIVE!: What encouraged you to pursue your current career?

Malinda Vasquez (MV): Originally, I wanted to become an Ob-Gynecologist, just like my aunt who I looked up to when I was a child. However, I was quite sickly, so I couldn’t stay up too late in the hospital. Thus, I decided to choose dermatology because I have always been fascinated with the skin since I’m a visual learner. I like to treat medical illnesses that I can see, touch and feel.

SL: What makes your profession enjoyable and at the same time fulfilling?

MV: I enjoy my profession because I make my patients happy, beautiful and confident, especially when I see them get better when they come visit for a follow-up. It’s fulfilling as well when I am able to treat and cure patients from their skin disorders like eczema, acne, skin asthma, psoriasis etc.

SL: How were you able to make a name for yourself in the industry that you’re in?

MV: I am just contented that I hear from my patients, their family members and friends that their skin problems have been resolved and/or have been cured and they feel so much better. What’s important to me is that I have helped them and that their quality of life improved.

SL: What’s your secret to success and how were you able to reach it?

MV: My secret is just to be passionate in what you do and learn to love your work. Just take time to listen and communicate well with the concerns of your patients and clients.

SL: If you could name one cultural heroine who influenced you in your chosen path, who would it be and why?

MV: I don’t really have one. I am just thankful to my supportive parents who have influenced me and guided me well with my chosen field of medicine. I am grateful that I have found my purpose in life and that is to be of service to others.

SL: What word of advice would give young girls who dream of being a girl boss like you one day?

MV: I advise young girls to find their purpose in life and to discover what they are good at. You will do great as long as you give your 100 percent in your chosen field.
