San Simon limits attendance of funeral wakes

AS PART of the measures implemented to contain the spread of coronavirus, the local government in San Simon town asked residents to limit funeral wakes to immediate family only.

This is to prevent gathering of people which will be in violation of the social distancing strongly recommended by the Department of Health amid the threat of coronavirus disease (Covid-19), said Mayor Abundio "Jun" Punsalan, Jr.

"We ask relatives and friends of the deceased to suspend for the meantime their visit to the wake and just pray for their soul at their respective own houses instead," he said.

Immediate family members are also advised to maintain social distancing during the wake and if possible, avoid walking during the funeral going to the cemetery.

"If possible, we ask families to let the body be blessed at their homes and then bring them directly to the cemetery," he said.

Punsalan said he understands the feeling of wanting to be with the departed loved one for the final moment, but the health safety of the alive must be prioritized at the moment.

He also clarified that funeral wakes are only allowed for non-Covid-19 related death, as those who died of the disease are instructed to cremate the bodies immediately.

"I understand the sadness and pain of losing your loved ones but we have to abide by the preventive measures we are implementing to safeguard you, your families and friends and community from the deadly disease," Punsalan said.
