Gunmen kill merchant, village councilor



TWO people, including a government official, were killed in gun attacks that occurred 12 hours apart amid the strict security measures due to the enhanced community quarantine to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Police Captain Edwin Duco, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) information officer, identified the fatalities as Abdel Abdani Muharram and Noel Alan Calapardo.

Duco said Muharram, a fish merchant, was shot around 8 p.m. Tuesday at Purok 5 in Sangali Village, Zamboanga City.

He said Muharram seated in a kiosk at the residence of Hadji Abdulhakim Saililla when five unidentified people with their faces covered with face masks arrived and shot the victim without provocation.

The victim was rushed but failed to reach the hospital alive, he added.

He said Calapardo, a councilor in Barangay Victoria, was fatally shot around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday along the Maria Clara Lobregat Highway in Boalan Village, this city.

Duco said investigation showed that Calapardo victim was driving his motorcycle on the way to Victoria when repeatedly shot by one of two men riding tandem in a motorcycle that tailed the victim.

The suspects sped off after the incident while Calapardo was rushed to the hospital by a police vehicle but was declared dead on arrival.

He said recovered from the crime scene were two spent shells of caliber .45 pistol and investigation continues to unmask the suspects. (SunStar Zamboanga)
