Use of pet leashes urged

BENGUET pet owners are asked to keep their animals on a leash following a reported case of rabies in the province.

The Office of Benguet Provincial Veterinarian reiterated on Tuesday, March 31, for pet owners to keep their pets at home.

“Pets should also stay at home together with their owners so that they would not be affected by rabies.

We asked people of Benguet to stay at home and please keep your dogs on leash as there had been one positive case of rabies,” Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Miriam Tiongan said.

Personnel of the Provincial Veterinarian on Wednesday, April 1, administered vaccination to 22 dogs and five cats within the area where the positive case was recorded.

Previously, a stray mad dog reported to have bitten several other canines leading their death, was put down in a bid to prevent it from harming other animals and the public, after testing positive for rabies, according to Tiongan.

Tiongan reminded stakeholders to be responsible pet owners and report possible changes in behavior of their pets.

An anti–rabies vaccination was conducted March in the different towns of the province but was suspended March 17 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rabies, a 100 percent fatal disease caused by a virus is transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal.

Republic Act 9482 or Anti-Rabies Act of 2007 is an act providing control and elimination of rabies which requires owners to have their pets vaccinated at three months old and every year after.
