Miners steal win from Palaro bound Sweetmates

LEPANTO Karrats bucked a streaking Sweetmates, 82–72, keeping its hope alive for a possible title in the open bracket of the ongoing 2nd Miners Cup basketball invitation at the Coyeesan gym.

Lepanto made a ten to nothing blasts midway in the fourth period to take the lead for good and steal a win after two heartbreaking losses in the tournament backed by Club 7882 SLU–Boys High School, Gary Lee Leighton and Smart Telecommunications.

Jonathan Collado fueled the fourth quarter run after trailing by one point at the close of the third period, 59–60 with less than six minutes in the ball game of the event also backed by Leverson Brothers, Chittick Fire and Security Services and Connex.

The Palarong Pambansa bound Sweetmates’ led the second and third periods with Jervy Calivu and Jomar Bernal doing most of the damage. Both finished with 13 points each in the ball game.

Karrats then rallied late in the fourth, with 2:33 remaining in the ball game for an 8- 3 spurts to seal the victory with Collado firing 16 points to lead the Lepanto squad.

In the women’s bracket, Saint Louis University Laboratory Girls High School suffered back-to-back defeats during the weekend against separate foes.

Baguio City National high School repeated over the SLU ladies basketball squad, 86–57 while the Ballers crashed the Louisians, 103–35.

Also winning in the women’s side is the University of the Cordilleras Jaguars defeating SKY Cable, 73–57.

In the 18 and under category, Saint Louis University Laboratory High School team A downed their younger Team C, 70–36.

In the open category, Philex Mines had an easy win over Tiptop via a default to secure another victory after drubbing the younger Sweetmates.
