Barangay tanod shot for calling out violators of ECQ

A BARANGAY watchman (tanod) was shot by a violator of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Sitio Latasan, Barangay Labogon, Mandaue City at 6:47 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2020.

The victim was Sosimo Callora, 37, a resident of Sitio Sto. Niño, Barangay Labogon.

Basak Police Station chief Maj. James Conaco said Callora and his fellow village watchmen were roving about the area to ensure that residents strictly adhere to the province-wide ECQ.

While making their rounds, Callora spotted the suspect, Arnel “Boyet” Caro, drinking with his friends.

Callora called out the group for drinking liquor outside of their homes and violating the protocols of the ECQ.

As he was about to leave, Callora was shot by Caro.

The barangay tanod sustained gunshot wounds on his left shoulder and chest.

Conaco said a concerned citizen called their station to report the incident.

They immediately brought Collaro to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City. He was discharged after receiving medical help.

Caro, though, is still at large and is now a subject of a follow-up operation.

Conaco said Caro was detained for his involvement in illegal drugs in 2018.

He was eventually released after availing of the plea bargain program.

Conaco said they are looking into personal grudge as a possible motive behind the shooting as the suspect may have had taken offense after he and his friends were reprimanded for violating the stay-at-home order. (KFD)
