Raffy Tivar wins grand title

RAFFY Tivar of Tagum City bested 19 others to capture the title of the four-leg Beating the Covid-19 Grand Prix Online Chess Tournament that concluded Sunday, April 5.

Tivar recorded a total of 65 points to rule the competition held via lichess.org and sponsored by lawyer Jong Guevarra Jr. His 21 and 22 points in the first and third legs gave him the advantage in the overall individual ranking despite a dismal performance in the fourth and final leg a she was limited to only seven points.

Tournament coordinator Ely Acas said, “Nag-champion lang gyud na si Tivar kay taas na syag score after third leg (Tivar emerged grand champion as he was already way ahead after the third leg).”

Ramil Langamon of Panabo City and Renard Mamaril of Digos City, who scored identical 63 points, placed second and third, respectively.

Rounding up the top 10 were Marlowe Cagulada (61), Godo Tisocan (60), Jaybel Dalipen (57), Alfred Moulic (54), Ian Dwight Llanto (54), Romeo Larayos (54) and John Gerard Acedo ( 51).

Grand Prix runner-up Langamon emerged fourth leg champion after earning 18 points over 16-pointers Tisocan and Mamaril who grabbed the next two spots.

Sports patron Guevarra earlier said organizing the online chess tournament series aimed to give woodpushers an avenue to play and compete as the community quarantine was implemented last month after the state of public health emergency was declared in the country due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

The top three winners received mobile load of P300, P200 and P100 with t-shirts.
