LAST night, while watching and listening to our President during his LIVE broadcast, I salute him for being steadfast and maintaining his composure amidst the onslaught of Covid-19 pandemic. He was trying his best to accommodate all sectors’ woes and whines. He gave a stern message to the Finance Secretary to source out funds to augment the emergency budget of P270 billion for two months as it will not be enough to provide the necessary assistance to the poorest of the poor.
“We are finding ways to adjust the budget... We will prioritize the people, the stomach. If they have nothing to eat, a human being can become violent,” the President said. He is encouraging everyone to help fight this virus by using mask at all times and by staying home as much as possible. Still, he managed to lighten the mood by throwing jokes to subdue the heavy burden he was carrying. Nevertheless, our President is a working president, not a perfect one but a qualified, devoted and strong individual. Can we just show support and pray for him?
In the local scene, our Mayor Oca rejected the manifesto filed by members of various community sectors to declare Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in Cagayan de Oro. He said it is discriminating to some sectors like the middle class and the poor. I support our Mayor on this stand. The local emergency fund will not suffice to accommodate the sectors that may need financial and in-kind support immediately. A lot of people will go hungry and this may lead to more serious problems. For sure, they will go to the streets or resort to more drastic actions that will result to chaos. This is something that we do not need right now. What we need to do is help out in any way we can and to give moral support for our Mayor; because for sure he is seriously considering the welfare of everyone in this city.
If we look closely and understand the real scenario, for us to end this pandemic fast, all we need to do is follow the orders from our national and local government units – City Hall, DILG, PNP, Military, and Barangays, we really have to stay home. The virus, according to DOH, will not move. People move it. If we, people, will stop moving, the virus stops too, and it dies. Only then, we will be able to “flatten the curve”. That is really the only solution until such time a working vaccine is developed and made available to the public. Let us comply. BE the SOLUTION, not the cause of the problem. In this manner, we are also helping our healthcare workers (the front liners) lessen their load by not adding to the numbers admitted to our limited numbers of hospitals. We really have to heed their advice seriously: STAY HOME, to unburden them.
Let us band together for a virus-free Cagayan de Oro. Our government can only do so much. Without our support, all efforts to contain the virus will become futile. This is the best time for us to unite as one. We have done this before and pretty much, we can do it again. Let us set aside our differences – may it be political, religious or any other belief. MAGKAISA na tayo at maging Filipino para sa bayan. Let us heal as one. UNITE.
