CHURCHES and business establishments are encouraged to create physical distancing plans in preparation for the lifting of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio announced on Tuesday, April 7.

The ECQ took effect starting at 9 p.m. of April 4 and will initially end at 11:59 p.m. of April 19.

Under ECQ, all non-essential establishments are orderly closed during its duration. Also, churches and other religious activities are barred to avoid mass gathering.

While Duterte-Carpio made no mention of shortening or extending the ECQ, as this will depend on the coronavirus disease situation in the city, she urged churches, offices, stores, and other business establishments to prepared their respective distancing plan in case the city decides to revert to community quarantine.

“Sa pagkakaron, magplano na tanang establishments, offices, tindahan, tanan, papaunsa nila macreate ang physical distancing among their employees and sa ilang customer and clients na ginaserve sa ilang offices (As of now, all establishments, offices, stores, and others should start planning how they would effectively implement the physical distancing among their employees, and to the customer and clients they are serving in their offices),” the mayor said in a radio interview on 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio.

She suggested that they could place markings on their floors and seats, observing the one-meter distancing.

Duterte-Carpio said physical distancing must still be observed even when ECQ will be lifted since, as per the recommendation of health consultants, there is no guarantee that the virus has already been contained.

“Even though mugamay ang kaso sa Covid, there will still be those nga wala na-catch sa milabyang adlaw (Even though the cases of Covid-19 will decrease, there are still those who may still be asymptomatic),” she said.

“What we want to do is to limit ang possibilities nga massive reinfection (limit the possibilities of massive reinfection),” she added.

In case the Covid situation in the city will not improve, she said the city might result in implementing the extreme ECQ, which might result in the closure of other establishments and the limit of the usage of the food and medicine (FM) passes.

“Di nato gusto kana mahitabo for us sa atoang kinabuhi. Hopefully kaning ECQ karon will give the effect nga gusto makita sa mga doctors, with regard sa patients, and sa Covid-postive numbers dinha sa atoa ng mga PUI (persons under investigation) centers and SPMC (Southern Philippines Medical Center) (We do not want to get there. Hopefully, the ECQ will give the effect our doctors wanted to reach, with regards to the Covid-19 positive patients, and those PUIs admitted in our centers and SPMC),” Duterte-Carpio said.

As of April 6, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that Davao City has 65 Covid-19 positive patients, wherein 17 had recovered, while 11 died. (RGL)
