Manuel Villar is PH’s wealthiest

FIFTEEN Filipino tycoons are among the wealthiest people on the planet, based on Forbes Magazine’s 2020 list of billionaires.

Self-made businessman and former politician Manuel Villar remains the country’s wealthiest for the second straight year, with an estimated net worth of US$5.7 billion.

The Vista Land group founder ranked 298th out of 2,095 billionaires counted by Forbes globally.

Port terminal operator and gaming tycoon Enrique Razon Jr. is the second richest in the Philippine list with an estimated fortune of $3.2 billion.

All of the six children of the late tycoon Henry Sy Sr., who dominated the list for over a decade when he was still alive, made it to the 2020 ranking.

Hans, Herbert, Henry Jr., Harley and Teresita Sy Coson have net worth estimated at $2.3 billion, $2.2 billion, $2.1 billion, $2.1 billion and $2 billion, respectively.

Their sister Elizabeth Sy was 10th richest in the country with an estimated net worth of $1.8 billion.

Airline tycoon Lucio Tan ranked as eighth richest with an estimated fortune of $1.9 billion, while property magnate Andrew Tan came as ninth wealthiest with an estimated net worth of $1.8 billion.

Robert Ongpin ranked 11th locally with an estimated fortune of $1.8 billion, while Jollibee founder Tony Tan Caktiong followed with net worth at $1.5 billion.

San Miguel Corp. president Ramon Ang earned the 13th spot having an estimated fortune of $1.5 billion followed by Robert Coyiuto Jr. and Eduardo Cojuangco, with estimated net worth of $1.4 billion and $1.1 billion, respectively.

Gloablly, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos remains the world’s wealthiest person for the third year in a row. He’s worth $113 billion. The e-commerce giant he runs has been in the spotlight amid the pandemic as it is hiring 100,000 full- and part-time workers to help meet the increased demand from consumers staying home and shopping online.

Bill Gates keeps his spot as number two richest, followed by luxury goods tycoon Bernard Arnault, who had overtaken Warren Buffett to move into the number three spot for the first time.
