Servando to compete in Asian tilt

BACOLOD-based Nikki Therese Lim-Servando is scheduled to see action against the best in the region in the Badminton Asia Youth Under-19 Championships alongside six other junior badminton players on Sunday in Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Last year, the 15-year-old Servando also represented the country in the Bangkok Open 2009 His Majesty Cup in Chiang Mai Municipal Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

In this year’s competition, aside from Servando, among those donning the Philippine color are the national team and pool members Malvinne Ann Venice Alcala, Gelita Castilo, Gerald Sibayan and Niko Shadrach Saquin, as head of the RP contingent, together with youngsters Philip Escueta and Jose Martinez.

The mixed team event is currently ongoing and will end on March 24, which also serves as the start of hostilities in the individual competitions with the RP juniors bracketed in Group C with third seed Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Events on tap are the boys’ and girls’ singles, boys’ and girls’ doubles and mixed doubles.

Meanwhile, Alcala, Castilo, Sibayan and Saquin hope to show what they learned from the Badminton Asia Confederation Asian Juniors Intake I Training Camp held earlier in the week.

Servando, on the other hand, has just completed another stint in the just-concluded Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet in Kalibo, Aklan where she also bagged the girl’s secondary singles title.
