Legaspi: ECQ with God

Legaspi: ECQ with God

THE enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) brought about by Covid-19 has just been extended. Looking at the ECQ, it has seemed to have helped us flatten the curve not because we followed the guidelines but because there are yet many procedures to undergo before we get the real figures of infected. Thank God, fatalities in Bacolod were manageable but looking at the world, the death rate caused by this pandemic is high. We ask God to continue placing his mantle of protection over us.

Looking on the brighter side of this pandemic, it has done us more good than bad. It is time for us to stop and renew our relationships with God. For us Catholics, we have brought the church into our homes. Spiritual communion became very clear to us now. The “Oratio Imperata” is now prayed with more fervor than in the past. What is more joyful about this is that the presence of God in each one is now really felt. I hope that when this pandemic is over, we will maintain a good relationship with God.

Secondly, this pandemic has made us more human. In the recent past, we lived a very busy life. We were like “push button machines”. In short, our intelligence had become artificial. For example, grading our students became too mechanical. Teachers failed to consider the circumstances that led to poor academic performance.

Today, teachers are more humane in giving grades. We become more human as we now have more time to reflect. Today, we have more time to consider reason and emotions in our decisions. I wish that after this pandemic, we maintain our humanness in all things.

Thirdly, now we could easily see and appreciate the beauty of God’s creation. One could now see the beauty of the petals of the flowers, the cuteness of ‘askal’ dogs, the color of the cat, the sounds of the birds, the gracefulness of the fishes and more. In the recent past, all these came to pass without notice. We took for granted the beauty of the gifts of God. We were too busy looking for non-essential things at the malls. We were too busy eating half-cooked and non-nutritious foods. Worst, we were busy being entertained by all the lies brought about by the entertainment world. We failed to see God in His creation. I hope that after this crisis, we will continue to care for God’s creatures and appreciate their connectedness with us.

Renewing relationship with others is a trend I had noticed with this crisis. We now know more about our neighbors. We know more who our real friends are. It is during this time that we know people. We know their interests. Some people shut their doors and windows for others. Some just appreciate what others are doing but when asked to do the same, they turn away. Some changed for the better while others for the worst. As we usually say, one will only know his true friend, when he is in crisis. I pray that after this pandemic, we can continue with the renewed friendship that we had with our friends.

Socrates famous cliché , “know thyself” is one thing that I had learned these past weeks. I have done a little reflection of my life and I saw how God unfolded his love for me. We need to see God’s message in every event of our life. Today, God is telling me to slow down and appreciate every moment. As Bishop Gerry Alminaza of San Carlos taught us in our classes, “Live the present moment”. So today, I let every moment pass with praise and thanksgiving to God. I wish that I be given more time to reflect on the events of my life, even after this pandemic.
