WITH the continued increase of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in Davao City and its expected lingering economic and social adverse effects, the City Government of Davao declared a period of mourning and vigilance from April 17 to December 31, 2020.

In Executive Order 25 series of 2020, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said all city and national government celebrations, parties, anniversaries, and festivities within the year shall be cancelled.

However, commemoration of important dates and legal holidays will still push through but will be kept short and simple.

The mayor also ordered all barangays to refrain from extravagant celebration of their fiesta.

The executive order also cancelled all founding anniversaries and/or Araw ng Barangay celebrations.

For private parties, Duterte-Carpio mandated that it should be kept with no more than 25 guests. Big celebrations are advised to be postponed until 2021.

Moreover, the private sector was told to consider food distribution, feeding program, or financial assistance to their employees.

Individuals and organizations -- public or private -- found mounting events with thoughtless extravagance in expenses for pleasure or display shall be dealt with by the City Government with proper file actions.

As of April 14, Davao City remains to be the city with highest number of cases in Davao Region. The Department of Health-Davao recorded a total of 80 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the city. Of the figure, total recoveries’ count is now at 44, while death toll at 16. Total active cases, as of writing, are at 20.
