POPE Francis has appointed Archbishop Francisco Padilla from Cebu City, Philippines as the new Papal Nuncio to Guatemala.

In a report by CBCPNews, Padilla, 66, was appointed by the Pontiff to his new post in the Central American state late Friday, April 17.

"Padilla is one of the three Filipino apostolic nuncios who are active in the service," said the official news agency of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

The others are Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the papal nuncio to Spain, and Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, the Pope's envoy to Australia.

Padilla, who was born in Cebu City on September 17, 1953, also has a brother who also served as apostolic nuncio — the retired Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla.

Prior to his appointment, Padilla has been serving as Papal Nuncio to Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Yemen since 2016.

Ordained as priest on October 21, 1976, he first served as a priest in the Archdiocese of Cebu.

He then entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See in 1985, with his first assignment being in the Apostolic Nunciature of the Dominican Republic.

Padilla then worked in the pontifical representations in Venezuela, Austria, India, Japan, and Australia.

In 2006, he was ordained as archbishop in view of his work as nuncio to Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, and Tanzania. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
