AS TOTAL cases of coronavirus infections continued to rise, the number of patients who had died from the disease topped 400 as of 4 p.m. Sunday, April 19.

The Department of Health (DOH) said 409 people had died from the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), with 12 mortalities reported in the last 24 hours.

The agency also reported that 172 more people have contracted the novel coronavirus, which causes Covid-19.

This brought the total number of infections to 6,259 as of Sunday.

Of this number, 572 have survived the disease, with 56 reported in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the DOH accredited one more molecular laboratory, the Chinese General Hospital in Manila.

This brings to 17 the total number of facilities in the country that are certified to be capable of conducting real-time RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) tests to detect the novel coronavirus, or Sars-CoV-2.

Globally, Covid-19 has killed 146,088 people out of the 2.16 million infected with the virus as of April 18, the World Health Organization said. (MVI/SunStar Philippines)
