Fairview officials aid locked down residents

BARANGAY Fairview officials in Baguio City are helping those in need in the time of lockdown.

Kagawad Richard Jimenez said he has distributed live chickens, hot meals and bread to those most in need in the area since the barangay lockdown.

“Wala pang date ang pag-lift ng lockdown. We were locked down because of headed residents playing basketball, that is why I am appealing to all (at Fairview) to please do not go out if not needed and wear your facemasks,” Jimenez said.

Barangay Fairview is on an indefinite on lockdown by orders of Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong due to general disregard for guidelines in the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Police are now manning all entry and exit points of the area with residents forbidden to go out.

Jimenez said a system to buy essential needs of people at the barangay has also been established with point persons getting the list of essential items like medicine and food from households and buying it for them.

The barangay kagawad said there are times people have no money to buy their essential needs and has at times, take the money from his own funds.

“Ano magagawa natin, kung hindi tulungan (We can’t help but help them),” he added.

Since March, Jimenez has conducted weekly soup kitchens and distributing steaming arroz caldo and pandesal to the various areas in Fairview, targeting puroks most in need.

Jimenez said he has also been able to give out over 300 live chickens to the area’s most in need since the Luzon-wide ECQ and the village lockdown last week.

Barangay Fairview is one of the most populated in the city with at least 12,000 individuals consisting of 3,000 households, divided into seven puroks which are in turn assigned to each kagawad.

Jimenez said he is in charge of puroks 5 and 6 but has teamed up with purok 7 Kagawad Victor Eta-et for most of the programs and with the money coming from both of their pockets.

Jimenez added a Covid-19 positive case in the barangay has long recovered with contact tracing and testing done.

The village official said the case was cleared last month and assured there were no contacts in the barangay as the infected person was asked to go straight to the hospital for confinement at that time.

Upon recovery and ample quarantine recommended by health officials, the Covid-19 survivor was then asked to go home to his family.
