Cuevas-Rañada: Community quarantine: To extend or not?

MANY of us Kagay-anons are wondering when will the imposed community quarantine in the whole of Cagayan de Oro be lifted. After Mayor Oscar Moreno declared that the “stay at home” policy is greatly dependent upon the recommendation of the health department, many of us are anxious when we can go back to the old normal.

And now that barangay exit pass is implemented throughout the city, will this result to ending the ongoing community quarantine we are currently in or its further extension?

Medical experts, both from local and abroad, gave their stern warning that lifting the community “lockdown” prematurely could result to surge of Covid-19 cases in every locality. Even the national government is in dilemma on what approach will be taken after the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in entire Luzon ends on April 30. Just recently, the Singaporean government declared the extension of the “circuit breaker” until June 1. This is after an overwhelming surge of coronavirus cases over the weekend, which was mainly attributed to the earlier cessation of community quarantine. Surely, we do not want the same scenario to happen in our community more so in our country.

Pretty much, the answer to our common question on whether this community quarantine will end soon or continue will be dictated largely on our individual cooperation to every single mitigating measures that our national and local leaders implements. If we are told to stay at home and minimize our non-essential travel outside, we have to heed that call. If wearing face mask is now mandatory, we should be mindful of our action every time we step outside our houses. Reported Covid-19 cases in our country has reached more than 6,000, unless we take this disease seriously, we can expect longer time inside our homes.

In this most trying times, we can only hope that this pandemic will end soonest. Our brothers and sisters with very limited resources are struggling to get by with their needs every day. And our government is now overwhelmed with requests for assistance.

Furthermore, our medical frontliners are risking their lives everyday attending to those with symptoms of this dreadful virus. At this point in time, let us all anticipate that our leaders will make a sound judgment when the time comes to make a decision for the betterment of everyone.

Now is the time to stop being negative. Let us be mindful of what to share in our social media to help mitigate misinformation. Instead, share or discuss relevant and accurate information. If not, stay out of social media and help do something to improve or mitigate the effects of climate change.
