IF YOU haven’t yet made an attempt to make Dalgona Coffee, dubbed the “quarantine coffee,” it’s either you haven’t succumbed to boredom or you’re not sure you can do it. Whichever the case, Dalgona Coffee is fun to make as seen through the countless photos and videos uploaded by netizens all over the world on various social media sites.

The name of this drink is derived from the Korean sugar sweet treat called “Dalgona,” because of its resemblance in looks and taste. This frothy drink gained widespread recognition and people are still making it while adding some personal touches. It’s not the hardest drink to prepare but people are taking notes.

For those who haven’t made the drink yet, here is the nitty-gritty.

Basic is key

This fluffy concoction takes three items in equal proportions to make: Coffee, sugar and hot water whipped to perfection, floating on a cup of iced milk. These are not just common items, they also won’t burn a hole through your pocket. For example, the coffee you use doesn’t have to be expensive as instant coffee will do the trick.

Execution is important

Dalgona Coffee is both easy and complex to make because as accessible as the ingredients are, it takes patience—especially the part about putting things together. It’s okay to dump both the coffee and sugar in a bowl right then and there. As for the water, add it gradually because there is such a thing as too much or too little and you find out how much you’ll need by adding it gradually. Up next is the whipping which requires a whisk, mixer or milk frother to create a thick and cloudy consistency. These will get the job done but if you don’t have these, a spoon will do.

Get ready for an arm workout as this will take you more than a few minutes to achieve the same result, otherwise, it will plop to the bottom of the cup. Do this and the result will be worth it. Some even swear using two forks at the same time to whip the mixture in a glass. Choose the weapon that suits you best.

Put your own spin

Since the drink becoming popular, people have been making their own versions of it which is great because it shows creativity. Apart from the source of inspiration, some of the alternatives include hot cocoa and matcha powder. Some have taken things up a notch by adding pearls, torching the top whip to give it that burnt look for a fancier twist, or incorporating something subtle like cinnamon. Whatever twist you choose, don’t forget to have fun, snap a photo of it and share your insight.
