ONE of the best sources of entertainment is karaoke, and Filipinos don’t shy away from the microphone!

Try it with your family at home since the last week of April is National Karaoke Week.

Here are some basic tips to make the most of a fun session!

Set it up

Before anything else, make sure you have everything you need. If you have one, check if the karaoke machine is working. If you’re opting to search for songs in karaoke version on the web, pray to God the WIFI can handle it. Also, set up the perfect day that’s convenient for everyone. Even though we’re home, each of us still have respective obligations from meeting deadlines to attending video conferences. Be considerate with your housemates so they can all free up their schedules.

Wait your turn

Other than not participating, one of the major buzzkills that happen at these things is when someone hogs the mic too much. Whether you’re with your partner, roommates or your family, it doesn’t matter if you’re related to them or you have a special bond—wait your turn. As funny as it may seem, some people are sticklers even when it comes to this. Just because it’s a chill session, doesn’t mean you have to throw your manners out the door. Be fun, be silly but don’t be selfish.

Go beyond your usual list

Unless you’re going for a theme night, it wouldn’t hurt belting out tracks you would rarely take on. One of the best moments during karaoke is singing songs with gusto without shame. It’s not only fun. It’s contagious that people will also want to take a cue from you.

Have fun

How long has it been since you got all amped up for a night out with friends, family and co-workers? If you’re up for it, turn it into a special night. Come up with a theme and have everything from the decorations, costumes and songs revolve around that theme. Don’t overdo it that it becomes a chore instead of a casual thing. Speaking of chores, you can hold a contest and even include chores as a consolation prize. Whoever scores the lowest does the chores for a day.
