Double registrants discovered in Oro

ELECTION officials in Cagayan de Oro City discovered recently that the city has unspecified number of double registrants in the May 10 polls.

City Commission on Elections (Comelec) Supervisor Gina Zayas-Sabio blamed the “unintentional” double registration of voters to an internal glitch that made it possible for the old registration files to be considered “active.”

“It [is] because of Comelec’s office-to-office transaction. So unintentional and pagka-double registrants,” Sabio said.

The total number of double registrants can’t be determined as of Wednesday, she added.

Sabio, however, assured that the public has nothing to worry “because these double registrants will be placed under Comelec watchlist.”

“They (double registrants) would not able to vote twice,” she assured.

But Cagayan de Oro Representative Rufus Rodriguez did not find the assurance reassuring enough.

“The Comelec must delete the names of those double registrants instead of putting them under the watch list,” the lawmaker said.

“There’s no such thing as watchlist so to make sure, I request Comelec that double registrants be deleted,” Rodriguez said.

Last November, the Comelec office in the city said it was able to remove thousands of names of persons who are confirmed dead.
