PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief Archie Gamboa on Tuesday, April 28, instructed all policemen to provide assistance to women in distress based on President Rodrigo Duterte’s order.

Policemen are expected to provide a ride to women who need to make essential travel to procure food, medicine and basic needs as well as to elderly and pregnant women, nursing mothers and women with small children.

“We recognize the vulnerability of women who need to go outside their homes to do essential chores especially among elderly and pregnant women,” he said.

“The PNP has been providing similar assistance to medical and healthcare personnel and other frontline workers while mass transportation is suspended under the ECQ,” he added.

On Monday evening, Duterte ordered policemen on police mobile cars to offer rides to women and bring them home.

“Tutal kung hindi, kung malayo pa, ikarga ninyo --- bring her to the boundary of the next barangay where she lives at tumawag kayo ng pulis doon ipasalubong na lang and for that police there to complete the journey of the whatever,” he said.

“Lahat ‘yan mga matanda, lalo ng may mga sanggol dala, mga babae sa gabi naglalakad tapos madilim ganun, they must be provided with transportation and that is the transportation of government. Maski --- karamihan diyan pulis. Huwag kayong mag-atubili kasi ang gasolina mura,” he added.

Duterte has extended the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila, 24 provinces and two cities until May 15, 2020 in a bid to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, which causes the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Under ECQ, public transport systems are suspended and the public, except the essential personnel and those who have to buy essentials, are required to stay home. (SunStar Philippines)
