IT’S National Teacher’s Day. In line with this, here are some of the most memorable fictional teachers featured in movies. By memorable, we mean the ones who have inspired us, made us laugh or had us quaking in our boots (not necessarily in that order).

John Keating,

“Dead Poets Society”

A professor who taught with such passion, his unorthodox teaching methods in poetry proved to be infectious. His students hung on his every word and their hearts were stirred as he encouraged them to think freely for themselves and more importantly, to “seize the day.”

Albus Dumbledore

“Harry Potter”

Professor Dumbledore is one of the most memorable fictional characters. Powerful, wise and eccentric, he is considered the most powerful wizard in the world, armed with guidance and who truly believes in love being the greatest magic of all.

Sharon Norbury

“Mean Girls”

Her being a role model wasn’t that obvious. Still, you have to give her credit for being the mediator when all the girls went stir crazy because of the “Burn Book.” In addition, she gave the main character, Cady Heron, another chance to redeem herself which was pretty big of her, considering Cady wrote in the book that lie about her pushing drugs.

Dewey Finn

“School of Rock”

Technically he wasn’t a real teacher but this oddball of a man not only taught the kids how to rock it, but his carefree and goofy personality also made it easier for him to connect to his students, building up their confidence.

Mr. Miyagi

“The Karate Kid”

Leave it to Mr. Miyagi to show that teaching isn’t limited to a classroom setting nor is it limited to only one source of material for learning; hence the household chores. “Wax on, wax off” clearly had its benefits to learning karate. On top of his skills, you also have to hand it to his level of patience.

Agatha Trunchbull

“Matilda”

Although Miss Honey was the ray of sunshine in Matilda’s life, Agatha Trunchbull was the dark cloud casting a shadow on her and the rest of the students with her instruments of intimidation. Her tactics certainly left a lasting impression on those who grew up knowing about this character.
