Parenting in a pandemic

Parenting in a pandemic

IT’S a special day for all mothers so expect to see a barrage of cheesy posts on your feed, complete with cutesy photos and a string of superlatives. Being the superhumans that they are, all moms deserve the extra TLC they get today but this year, the team decided to honor new mamas who are trying to raise their tots in these challenging times. As motherhood brings with it a host of changes and emotions, and goes beyond just carrying and caring for a child, these first-time moms weigh in on what it’s like to take on their new role.

“As a first-time mom, I had experienced a rollercoaster of emotions all throughout my pregnancy and I am forever grateful to everyone especially to my family for consistently cheering me up and lifting my mood. During the peak of this pandemic, honestly, I feel so much anxiety and fear for my son. As much as I want to protect him and my family, the best and only thing I can do is to stay positive and calm. More importantly, I pray and ask God for our safety and protection especially for my son’s. One day for sure, the world will heal and be a better place.” — Jay Colina-Villaceran

“As a mom, I’m a bit worried not knowing when this will all be over but I‘d rather focus my energy on positive things. I’m really grateful that I could spend more time with her, keep her safe during this pandemic and still have access to her basic needs. I also get to be creative and resourceful in making DIY learning toys for her as she’s starting to absorb everything happening around her. To my Katiana, my wish is that she grows appreciative of life, be good to others and to herself and do great in all that she loves as life is short and uncertain but beautiful if you make good of it.” — Klaudette Pato

“Motherhood in itself is already daunting and with this pandemic in the picture, it has become even more intense and terrifying. Apart from just tackling the postpartum phase, breastfeeding and newborn vaccines, among all other things on the mommy checklist, new moms like me are now faced with triple the fear and anxiety of the horrors of coping with and surviving Covid-19 with a newborn. I hope and pray we all get through this safe and healthy; and that if ever, heaven forbid, this kind of pandemic happens again in my child’s lifetime, I wish she will get to see a country with a better healthcare system ready for any pandemic that may come its way.” — Denice Dabon

“It definitely adds to the anxiety of being a first-time mom, but I choose to look at the brighter side of things. Denver gets to spend more time with both me and Derick—which could not have been possible if we weren’t locked down in our home—and that makes my heart full. I wish that this will be over soon so that Denver can finally see his grandparents, uncles, aunties and cousins, and live life as the way it should be, happy and free.” — Viverly Uy-Lim

“Having a child in the middle of this pandemic is so unsettling. As a first-time mom, I worry about the health and welfare of my baby as well as my family. It’s so sad that my baby came out during this troubling time when there are a lot of limitations. To my little one, despite the adversity, I wish and pray that you continue to grow with love and happiness and continue to be an inspiration to everyone. You are loved beyond measure and we are forever grateful to have you.” — Rachelle Orbeta-Sabella
