Cortez: The Way, the Truth and the Life

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This is the profound declaration of Jesus about himself in this Sunday’s gospel.

JESUS is the Way. Man has always devised means to reach God. Religions, denominations and other faith-based groups have been established down the centuries, each one claiming to be the right way, or even the only way, to salvation. But Jesus was very clear today. He is the one and only Way to the Father. Whoever has seen him has seen the Father; he is in the Father, and the Father is in him (John 14:9-10). We can be sure of this. Any way other than Jesus is a wrong way, and any teaching that claims salvation outside of Jesus is a false teaching.

Jesus is the Truth. In him there is no lie or deception. Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not a human being that he should lie, or a mortal that he should change his mind. Has he promised and will he not do it? Has he spoken and will he not fulfill it?” In Titus 1:2 we read that God never lies, and Hebrews 6:18 says that it is impossible for him to do so.

Everything that Jesus said is true, and all truth leads to him. The truth of God gives inner peace, but it is not cheap truth. It is not always nice to hear or easy to follow. Truth may even break us, but the same truth can make us genuinely whole.

Jesus is the Life. “In him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers – all things have been created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16). Through the Spirit he breathes life to man, and as God’s children, the Spirit lives in us, giving us grace after grace as we journey to eternity. And the life he shares with us is a full life. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, but Jesus came that we may have life, and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). He said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:25-26).

Reminded of this gospel, let us pray that we may always the right way and not the wrong one, believe the truth and not lies, and choose life and not death. The Way, the Truth, and the Life is a person, and his name is Jesus.
