Authorities exhume cadaver of eight-month-old Haran baby; autopsy ongoing

THE cadaver of an eight-month-old infant who died on May 9, 2020 was exhumed on Wednesday, May 13 at Madapo Cemetery to undergo autopsy.

The baby was identified as Althea “Starla” Dausay Albores, a Lumad from a family living inside UCCP Haran Compound in Davao City.

The body was exhumed by the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Scene of the Crime Operatives (Soco) and barangay officials of 8-A Poblacion District, Bankerohan, Davao City.

The information was disclosed by the mother of the infant on May 11 to the social workers of City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) during the relief goods distribution at UCCP Haran vicinity in Father Selga Street. The mother was believed to be mentally-challenged.

According to Mark Anthony Albores, 20, the father of the Lumad infant, his daughter died and was buried on the same day at Madapo Cemetery without proper preparation and documents from the government.

This incident is alarming since Lumads have been detained inside the premises of Haran sans physical distancing, making them more vulnerable in getting infected to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

These Lumad families are living in cramped makeshift houses devoid of proper sanitation, social distancing, and less access to health care services. In this situation, elders and the infants will be the most vulnerable since they are more prone to acquiring the coronavirus.

The need for these Lumad families to evacuate from Haran premises, have their health checked, and disinfect the area to eliminate possible contamination and prevent the spread of possible diseases are highly recommended. (PR)
