YOUR health is your wealth during these times. Hence, there is a growing interest in people to get healthy. This is for good reason! The healthier you are, the stronger your immune system can fight off diseases and infections. Keeping fit during this time also offers not only physical benefits but also helps our mental health as well. With the clamor for fitness centers to re-open, this is what we know so far about the virus and its implications for exercise:

1. The coronavirus can linger in the air from 8 to 14 minutes. This poses a challenge for those who exercise in an indoor space. While we can ensure social distancing, droplets may travel much further depending on the room’s airflow, ventilation and air-conditioning.

2. In some countries, outdoor exercise is permitted as long as social distancing requirements are met. This can be a possible solution for those who are antsy to socialize through exercising in a controlled setting.

3. There has been some movement toward resumption to competitive professional sports in other parts of the world. This requires swab testing of participants and everyone involved in the hosting of the event. For recreational sports, we may need a vaccine before contact sports can be permitted.

4. Sports like golf, tennis, practical shooting and the like can most likely resume sooner than other sports. For golfers, it is encouraged to drive your own cart and maintain social distancing.

5. Sports training can gradually resume. We may start with individual skills training in the meantime, and progress toward team training without any contact and having limited number of participants per training session. This is before we can resume full contact training and competition. Progress from one stage to another is dependent on our coronavirus statistics as well as guidelines from the government.

This time helps us realize how exercise and sports are essential in our community. In the meantime, there are tons of ways to stay active at home: Calisthenics, circuit training etc. We must eat healthy and make sure to get restorative sleep during this time. There is a brighter tomorrow, and we look forward to better news ahead.
