Limlingan: Balik probinsiya

PERHAPS many have realized now the importance of decongesting Metro Manila which has been the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. Undoubtedly, the number of those infected by the virus has been high and still climbing and one reason to that is congestion.

One of the prescribed protocols in the global fight against the virus is the observance of proper social or physical distancing. How can many families observe such when their homes are so small that they cannot avoid squeezing themselves in their abodes.

Because of the great number of inhabitants in the capital region, people have to squeeze themselves too in public places such as malls, public transportations, places of worships among others. Workplaces are so small too that many have to be contented in small cubicles or common work areas. They cannot demand for ample spaces since they need the work to earn a living and not the need for convenience.

Prior to the onslaught of the virus, there has been various moves to decongest Metro Manila through the establishment of government offices outside the said region and the improvement of airports and seaports in various provinces. Even known universities and colleges have established their campuses in the countryside to cater students living in suburbs and rural areas.

The move to decongest Metro Manila has now resurrected anew as one way to help stop the spread of the Covid-19. This is a practical and very seemingly effective move to combat the deadly pandemic. Besides, the government in strongly mandating people to practice distancing.

The BPP is aimed at creating new sustainable and productive communities in the countryside through the establishment of housing projects and providing livelihood activities to sustain local economies. Local resources shall be tapped with the people to be equipped with knowledge and skills for activities that will jumpstart economic and social develoment.

Further, with the said program, provinces shall enjoy faster development with the government's inputs for economic development. There are indeed a lot vacant and idle areas in the countryside that are thirsting for improvement. Developing these would make these areas productive.

Gone are the days when Metro Manila seemed to be a paradise to many who are blinded by the idea that there are a lot of opportunities in the capital region. The truth is, the cost of living is far cheaper in the provinces where life and living is more simple than in highly urbanized cities in Metro Manila.

The formula is simple and the government should prioritize this program. Provide decent housing infrastructures and create jobs so that new communities can become self-reliant and self-sustaining. Other needs shall then follow to be provided by the government such as security and recreation.
