'Mentally challenged' woman shot dead in Leyte

A GUNMAN onboard a sports utility vehicle (SUV) shot dead a mentally challenged woman in Javier, Leyte on Sunday, May 17.

The victim was identified as Rocel Lucero, 41, a resident of Barangay Malaguicay, Abuyog.

Initial investigation disclosed that the victim was sitting on the stairs of Barangay Tanod Outpost in Picas Norte, Javier around 11 a.m. Sunday when a maroon SUV suddenly stopped and a man fired at the victim four times.

The gunman sped off toward MacArthur, Leyte, police said.

A team from the Scene of the Crime Office-Regional Crime Laboratory Office (Soco-RCLO) Regional Office-8 arrived at the scene around 1:30 p.m. and found four empty shells and one piece full metal slug of an unidentified caliber of firearm.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical assistance but she was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Javier Municipal Police Station is conducting hot pursuit operation for the possible identification and arrest of the suspect.

The motive in the shooting is yet to be determined. (SunStar Philippines)
