Utzurrum: Oh my, Bougainvillea!

The Scene

CEBU’S garden and bonsai growers have bloomed ever so healthily the past years, that now, these collectors have specific varieties of flowers they choose to propagate. Like the Bougainvillea Club of Cebu, which staged its 2020 Extravaganza at Ayala Center Cebu, The Terraces earlier this year, and brought together the country’s top producers of imported bougainvilleas (bombil in Cebuano).

There were Martin Villaflores of San Martin’s gardens-Cebu; Domingo Villaver and Julianne Grace Embate of Carcar; Sheila Mendac and Irish Montesor of Valencia, Dumaguete City; and Mary Grace Belleza of Davao. They not only exhibited their flowers but also easily sold super rare and imported bombil to an enthusiastic crowd!

Cebu’s up-and-coming producers were not far behind. Welcome to the club Mary Ann Lugtu and Ma. Royla Cerojano; the Pangkabuhayan Ladies of Sen. Imee Marcos joined in by providing rooted and grafted bombil.

Even National Artist Tony Alcoseba, and others led by Celso Pepito, contributed bougainvillea artworks. Meantime elsewhere, the extravaganza gift shop of art crafters Debbie Ann and Jeane displayed cement bonsai pots, fiber cement pots, macrame, accessories, shirts and souvenir items etc.At the booths of Harley Ruedas and Julie Neo, were everything from garden materials to plant food.

And here’s even more: Cebu Safari and Adventure Park, with its vast and varied bombil collection, as well as the garden of landscape impressario Jaime Chua and Jardin de Muntuerto in Carcar, added color and pizazz to the show.

The one-of-a-kind, 14-day extravaganza also focused on seminars conducted by the very knowledgable collectors on bombil bonsai, topiary and massing, pollination and grafting, care and how to cultivate those dazzling, delicious colors!

And what’s a show without highlights? There were three: Featured on this page are four award-winning entries—prize was a whopping P100,000.

Then they had the much-awaited garden tours around the island’s green landscape. The breathtaking hillside garden of Villa Mariquita was open to the public, and so were the hectares of bougainvillea orchards of top landscape artist Jaime Chua, who hosted lunch.

Twilight was when Jun Muntuerto of Jardin de Muntuerto in Perrelos, Carcar, hosted dinner for the weary but certainly happy tourists!

Now, Cebu’s latest dream of having a bougainvillea-lined cityview, will soon vibrantly come true, thanks to the members of the Bougainvillea Cebu Garden Club!
