THE Covid enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) journey ended for most of us last May 15, 2020. Most places in the country shifted from ECQ to general community quarantine (GCQ) except for several areas, National Capital Region included. In the two months of ECQ, everyone was encouraged to become creative in their approaches to work, interaction, and engagements.
For seven straight weeks, AdDU Athletics Director Noli Ayo led a regular Monday-Wednesday-Friday online interactive sports forum. It was an invitation to journey and navigate sports through the pandemic. And what a journey it was.
Key figures in Philippine sports and beyond graced the forums. As the sessions were winding down, sports personalities from other countries also became resource speakers and participants got to hear how they were coping with the pandemic’s limitations.
It was seven weeks of gaining insights and wisdom and, importantly, making new friends. In the world we live in, connections are essential, and the forums have allowed us to strengthen our bonds and build new ones. If there is one takeaway from those seven weeks: Sports is indeed a vital cog in society, and we have to start harnessing its untapped potential to build more bridges for uplifting communities.
In our current state, we are very divided in everything, but sports have proven time and again that it can hold us together.
Remember Pacquiao fights? Sea Games? Fiba? AFC Qualifiers? Olympics? Perhaps it is high time, in the advent of the “New Normal,” that we look beyond sports as just competition but rather as a bridge for community building and improved citizenship. The MWF forum scratched the surface for us, sports advocates. Let us build on it and make it an essential tool as we usher the “new normal.”
The little AHA! moment of the online sports forum did its wonders. It has opened a space for dialogue and interaction among sports advocates. It taught new skills and insights for participants. And most notably, it built bridges through sports.
MWF also stands for More Wonders Forward as we continue to navigate amidst this pandemic.
“Our lives are made
In these small hours
These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away
But these small hours
These small hours still remain”
