41 new Covid-19 cases logged in Metro Cebu, Province

THE Cebu City Health Department (CHD) recorded 18 new cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) on Saturday, May 23, 2020.

The new cases came from Barangays Duljo (two); Suba (three); Tejero (one); Punta Princesa (one); Hipodromo (one); Basak Pardo (one); Mambaling (three); Ermita (two); Labangon (one); Basak San Nicolas (one); and Pasil (two).

The CHD also recorded four new deaths from Barangays Duljo, Ermita, Hipodromo and Punta Princesa, bringing the total number of mortalities in Cebu City to 23.

Cebu City has 1,872 Covid-19 positive patients.

Mandaue City also recorded three new confirmed Covid-19 cases on May 23, including a 47-year-old male inmate of the Mandaue City Jail.

The other two patients are a 66-year-old female from Sitio Tribunal in Barangay Centro and a 41-year-old female from P. Remedios St. in Barangay Banilad.

Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office responders will decontaminate the areas involved.

Mandaue City has 222 confirmed Covid-19 cases with seven recoveries and three deaths.

In Lapu-Lapu City, a resident of Sitio Panas, Barangay Subabasbas became the city's 79th Covid-19 case, said Mayor Junard Chan on his official Facebook page.

Cebu Province reported 19 new Covid-19 cases on May 23.

In her regular press conference, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said 11 of the cases are from Talisay City.

On his Facebook page, Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas said eight of the patients, who were discovered during their contact tracing operations, have been isolated.

The three other new Covid-19 cases were identified as a 16-year-old girl from Sitio Magay, Barangay Tanke; a 43-year-old man from Lower Cabanyan, Barangay Bulacao; and a 45-year-old woman from Sitio Didos, Barangay Linao.

All three will be transferred to a quarantine facility.

New Covid-19 cases were also reported in Minglanilla (three), Consolacion (one), Pinamungajan (one), Carmen (one), Tabuelan (one) and a newborn from Samboan town.

Cebu Province has 104 Covid-19 cases.

The Department of Health reported 180 new cases nationwide on May 23, bringing the total count to 13,777.

Six additional mortalities were also recorded, raising the death toll from Covid-19 to 863.

The number of persons who have recovered from the disease continued to increase, reaching 3,177, with 85 reported in the last 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 114 are from the National Capital Region, or Metro Manila, while 66 are from various other regions.

Confirmed cases had averaged more than 200 a day for nearly two weeks before dropping to below 200 on Friday, May 22.

Globally, nearly five million people have contracted the novel coronavirus, or Sars-CoV-2.

As of May 22, the World Health Organization said there were more than 4.9 million confirmed cases in 216 countries, including 327,821 deaths.
