LAST Sunday, May 24, 2020, the Catholic world celebrated the feast of the Ascension of our Lord and the World Communication Day. These are two related celebrations. Ascension is the rising of Jesus to heaven to be united with the Father and promising the Apostles and disciples that God will be sending them the Spirit and He will be with us until the end of time. Meanwhile, the celebration of World Communication Day reminds us of the beauty and essence of communion with all.

Communication is the transfer of data or information from one being (source) to another (receiver). The transferred information must be clear and true to facts. Feedback is needed for they say that there is a complete and comprehensible transfer of information. Openness is the key to perfect communication. Argumentation is a manifestation of complete communication. When Jesus ascended to heaven, he gave instructions to the disciples and was very clear that the Spirit will guide them.

The quarantine period has given all of us the great opportunity to communicate. It gave us space to reconnect with one another. Modern and contemporary media are good links for communication. The cellphone and the internet have shrunk the world. In the past the snail mail would get at least three weeks to get your letter across the globe. Today, in a matter of three seconds, your message is transferred. However, the danger is always there for miscommunication and misunderstanding. The swiftness of communication processes most often leads one not to think but to respond immediately.

Reflection is one key in perfect communication. One should give a little time before making a response. What is happening to the world today is that we fail to reflect on what we say that later we regret the consequences of our responses. The sad thing with contemporary media is our failure to reflect upon the things we say and do. How do we reflect then? Have you seen yourself in the mirror lately? Is that you in the mirror? No, that is your reflection. Ponder on what you see. Like getting old can only be reflected in the mirror. Ample time is needed to do a good reflection. The community quarantine has given us this opportunity to reflect on many things and situations.

During the quarantine period, many households had more time to communicate to God, family, friends, and neighbors. Many had the chance to know more about who they are and what they are. Many of us have renewed our relationship with God and have tasted the real beauty and miracle of the Eucharist. Many have also started to pray the rosary. Many have also prayed well the prayers for our relief from the disease. Most of us got connected and reconnected with our friends and relatives. A simple "hi" in social media could do miracles and mysterious things. God provided us and continues to provide us with all the opportunities to connect and reconnect.

So, as we wait for the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, we continue to share the love of God by communicating with one another and by sharing ourselves for the good of the community. With one heart and mind, we give all to God through our Blessed Mother.

St. Rita de Cascia, pray for us.
