2 arrested in raid on Makati Covid-19 clinic

AUTHORITIES arrested two Chinese nationals in a raid on a clandestine medical clinic in Makati City which was allegedly being used to “treat” patients suffering from the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), police reported on Wednesday, May 27.

In a report, the Makati City police said they raided the Goldstar Medical Clinic and Pharmacy Corporation at the New Lasema Spa building located in Barangay San Antonio on Tuesday, May 26.

Arrested during the raid were David Lai, a doctor with no license to practise in the Philippines, and Bruce Lai, who had converted their rented office space into an illegal medical facility.

Recovered from the clinic were various medical supplies such as syringes, Covid-19 test kits and several boxes of Chinese medicine, which are not registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Makati Police Chief Oscar Jacildo said the clinic has no business permit and the Chinese doctor working there has no license to practice in the Philippines.

Jacildo said they conducted the raid after receiving reports of a drainage system that is frequently clogged by hospital waste.

Charges against the suspects are being prepared while four patients who were at the clinic during the operation will undergo checkup by the Makati Health Office.

Earlier, authorities also raided an illegal medical facility in Fontana Leisure Park in Pampanga which was allegedly being used to treat Chinese Covid-19 patients. (SunStar Philippines)
