K-reative ways to spend your summer

K-reative ways to spend your summer

SUMMER has arrived! The sun is shining brighter and the days are getting hotter. It’s the time of the year everyone looks forward to.

It’s the time to go to the beach and take a dip in the refreshing clear blue waters or drive up to Baguio to cool off with the fresh mountain air.

For some, it’s even a chance to take break and fly off to Hong Kong, Japan, US or some other country.

But this year, it’s not happening, is it?

The ECQ is curbing the pandemic but it has also put a nail in a lot of our summer plans. Commercial flights have been suspended for general use and are only designated for essential travel. You can’t take a road trip with friends or family because one can only go out for food, groceries and medicine. We are all still quarantined in our homes.

However, before we start ranting about our ruined vacation plans, we should take comfort in knowing that by staying home, we are saving lives, helping the frontlines, protecting ourselves, our family, and others from contracting the virus. For that, thank you for being responsible!

So what about summer? Isn’t it such a waste to let the sunny days go by being stuck at home?

Well, if you are K-reative enough, you can make your own summer staycation as productive and fun as going to your usual vacation destinations!

Make your home into a personal resort.

There are a lot of inflatable and personal pools that you can buy online or at your local supermarket. Set it up, fill it up with water and presto! You have a pool for everyone in your family to take a dip in. Buy some fruits, pop it in the freezer, and then blend it for your own resort-style fruit shake. Don’t forget to put some of your favorite beach music on like Bob Marley or Beach Boys to complete the ambience!

Create a secret garden.

You don’t have to go out of town to enjoy the beautiful green scenery. You can plant your own garden of flowers or vegetables. You can use pots and plant boxes, or you can even recycle plastic bottles. Pick up some of your favorite flower or vegetable seeds from an online store or at the grocery. You can also try using the seeds from your favorite fruits. There are tutorial and video hacks you can watch to make homemade compost, and how to decorate your garden. So, go green this summer!

Meet up with loved ones... online.

The internet is not only good for watching videos, emailing, and online shopping this summer. There are some apps that you can use to video call, not just for work, but to connect with your family and friends as well. Set up a time to have a conference call with them and have your own online reunion. Catch up on the latest chismis or just hang out with them to see how they are doing. The ECQ has been rough on all of us, so reaching out will really do everyone some good.

Learn something new.

In the past, we have probably said that we don’t have time for a hobby. Now that we are quarantined at home, we have nothing but time. So, take out that old guitar. Bring out the oil paint and canvas. Remember the camera in the closet? Take up photography again! Learn to cook an Italian dish. Do all these with your family. There are tons of tutorials online, just type it in the search box and get started!

And if you want to learn new useful skills, Tesda and other learning institutions, local and abroad, have offered to teach online courses for free during this quarantine.

Travel the world... virtually.

There’s nothing like the experience of travelling. Seeing new places, visiting historical sites, learning about the art and culture of a country. And you can still do it — not physically, but virtually! There are cool links at websites like TravelandLeisure.com that take you on free virtual tours of museums, zoos, historical sites, tourist destinations, holy sites, amusement parks, beaches around the world! And guess what? No need for visas! Your dream destination is just a click away!

Some other fun things you can do:

• Legally stream a free concert or a play like Cirque du Soleil “O”, Ang Huling El Bimbo, Shakespeare’s Globe and many others.

• Finish your reading list.

• Film a video just for fun. Try a Tiktok challenge or record yourself singing with your family.

• Make homemade ice cream.

• Throw a dance party with your kids.

• Get your kids off the mobile and play “old school” games like hopscotch, hide and seek, patintero, Chinese garter and more!

There are tons of other things you can do if you use your imagination and get K-reative!
