MAYORS in Negros Occidental are unanimous on their stand for the postponement of the school opening on August 24.
The consensus was made in a teleconference of Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson with the mayors Wednesday, May 27, said Charina Magallanes-Tan, spokesperson of the Provincial Incident Command Center.
"The Negros mayors are one with the governor on his stand on the postponement of the school opening," Magallanes-Tan said.
Lacson earlier said that he is in favor of scrapping this school year 2020-2021 because of the threat of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
Lacson said it is much better if classes will start next year.
"Nobody will be left behind if there are no classes. One year rest is not so bad. It's safer and by that time, there could already be vaccine or cure for Covid-19," Lacson pointed out.
President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered that classes for this school year shall only open when there is already available cure or vaccine for Covid-19.
But DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III said Tuesday, May 26, they are ready and that classes may start on August 24 provided that health protocols shall be observed, especially the wearing of face mask and social distancing inside the classrooms.
