Tell it to SunStar: Time to move on

THINGS are slowly getting back to normal.

The government’s announcement that the whole country will be placed on general community quarantine between June 1 and 15 is proof of that.

Cebu City, though, will have to wait. It has been singled out to be on modified enhanced community quarantine probably because the city’s cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) have been rising steadily in the past few weeks.

There are naysayers who continue to warn about the dangers of the disease and they have every right to be alarmed.

There is no known cure or vaccine for Covid-19, which can be fatal. However, figures indicate that it is less fatal than other diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and dengue, among others.

So far, Covid-19 has claimed less than 1,000 deaths in the last two months in the country. Most if not all of the victims had preexisting medical conditions.

And, as health authorities have been pointing out and now government officials are also pointing out, eight of 10 persons who test positive for Covid-19 do not show any symptoms.

So it is only prudent for the Duterte administration to pick up before it left off. Its more than 100 million citizens have to live. They can’t do that if the country is under community quarantine status. (By Joey Bouchebel of Cebu City)
