AROUND 78,000 public school teachers in Central Visayas are set to receive a one-time cash assistance of P3,500 for "any teaching-related expenses" this June 2020.

Salustiano Jimenez, Department of Education (DepEd)-Central Visayas director, said this one-time cash allowance was used to be called the teachers' chalk allowance.

"Nowadays, we evolved. So ang mga maestra wala na ni gamit og chalk. It is because of that nga gi-increase siya into P3,500 and ang iyang description is no longer chalk allowance, but cash allowance," he said.

He said teachers can freely use the allowance to purchase teaching supplies and materials for the upcoming school year. This may even be for the needed mobile or internet load for online mode of teaching.

The DepEd central office, in a department memorandum dated May 4, said it will release separate policy guidelines that will allow teachers to use such allowance for "teaching supplies and materials related to the preparations to shift to the Learning Continuity Plan" of the department amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Salustiano also said that public school teachers no longer need to submit a receipt for the liquidation of this particular allowance.

He said they are currently processing the release of this fund and if possible, teachers can receive this not later than June 15. (WBS)
