Coronavirus infections top 20,000 as deaths increase

(UPDATED) Confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in the Philippines surged past 20,000 on Thursday, June 4, with an additional 634 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Of the 634, 313 are considered fresh cases while 321 are late cases, the Department of Health (DOH) reported.

The 313 fresh cases, a 41-percent increase from the 221 fresh cases on Wednesday, are the highest in a day since June 1.

Fresh cases refer to test results released in the last three days while late cases refer to test results released at least four days ago.

The death toll increased to 984, with the DOH reporting 10 deaths Thursday, after five consecutive days of single-digit numbers.

The recoveries also increased to 4,248, including 95 additional recoveries Thursday.

Of the 313 fresh cases, 114 are from the National Capital Region (NCR) or Metro Manila while 101 are from Central Visayas (Region 7) and 97 are from other regions. One confirmed case involves a repatriate.

Among the late cases, 44 are from NCR, 37 are from Central Visayas and 177 are from other regions. DOH also confirmed 63 cases among the repatriates.

The agency also said that as of June 3, there were 14,621 active cases, including 827 who were asymptomatic, 13,712 who have developed mild symptoms, 63 who have severe symptoms, and 19 who were in critical condition.

Globally, more than 6.28 million have contracted the novel coronavirus, or Sars-CoV-2, as of June 3. Of this number, 379,941 had died, according to the World Health Organization.
