House approves bill establishing Bacolod City general hospital

THE House of Representatives approved on third and final reading House Bill (HB) 6731, establishing a tertiary hospital in Bacolod City to be known as the Bacolod City General Hospital.

The proposed bill, which was approved on Wednesday, June 3, was authored by Bacolod City Representative Greg Gasataya.

Gasataya said Thursday, June 4, that under the guidelines of Department of Health (DOH), a tertiary general hospital offers services such as family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency services, outpatient services, and ancillary and support services such as clinical laboratory, imaging facility, and pharmacy.

Along with these facilities such as physical medicine and rehabilitation unit, ambulatory surgical clinic, dialysis clinic, tertiary clinic laboratory with histopathology, a blood bank, and third level x-ray may also be included.

"I thank our colleagues in the House Committee on Health and the 18th Congress for helping us with the approval of this bill," Gasataya said.

He said the bill will be forwarded to the Senate for its approval.

"It is high time that Bacolod will have its own hospital, one that will have state-of-the-art facilities and offers quality service to indigents and low income groups," he added.

Gasataya noted that the hospital project and the delivery of health services are close to his heart, as he recounted the difficulties of his family encountered when his mother was then under medication.

"We all know that a big amount of budget is needed to run a hospital. That is why it will be a great help if it is created by law, thus, it gets its own annual budget," Gasataya said.

He said that during the budget hearing last year, the DOH already committed to provide funds for the construction of the Bacolod General Hospital, and the counterpart of the City Government is to look for the lot for the construction of the building.

He added DOH also committed to provide equipment and they are willing to help manage the hospital in the first few years.

"We are thankful and let's cooperate to materialize this project because this is for all of us," Gasataya said.
