Voter’s registration to resume on July 1

VOTER’S registration in Cebu City will resume on July 1, 2020.

Cebu City North District Election Officer Marchel Sarno said only the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office located on Osmeña Blvd. will be open to accommodate applicants, adding there is no plan yet to open off-site registrations.

Sarno said they will expect long lines outside the office since they have to limit the entry so social distancing can be observed inside.

“We will have them line up outside. We will limit those who can enter inside the office,” he said.

However, Sarno reminded applicants that there is no rush since there is still enough time for them to register.

“Importante ang rehistro pero mas importante ang atong health. Karon panahuna nga mohangyo mi ninyo nga ayaw lang sa pagdali og pa-register kay taas pa kaayo (ang) panahon pag-register (Registering to vote is important but health is more important),” urged Sarno.

The Comelec has yet to release the deadline of voter registration.

Sarno also reminded applicants must wear masks at all times.

He said only the following identification cards (IDs) will be honored: Professional Regulation Commission ID, employee’s ID, Philippine Statistics Authority certificates, other government IDs, senior citizen ID, driver’s license, student ID, passport, National Bureau of Investigation clearance, Integrated Bar of the Philippines ID and postal ID.

Voter registration has been extended after the passage of Republic Act 11462, which provides for the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (to Dec. 5 instead of May 2020, its original schedule. (JJL)
